Salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are the three beauty ingredients that have generated the most searches during 2021.

This is according to research conducted by cosmetics brand, New Nordic, which assessed the search volume data of 30 popular beauty formulation ingredients.

Known for its exfoliating properties, salicylic acid clocked up 73,000 monthly searches, with hyaluronic acid, which hydrates and plumps the skin, at 64,000 monthly searches. Coming in third with 59,000 monthly searches, niacinamide, a form of vitamin B-3, can help build proteins in the skin and lock in moisture.

Other ingredients to make the top five are collagen (58,000 monthly searches) and retinol (50,000 monthly searches).

These popular ingredients were followed by aloe vera, vitamin C, azeliac acid, vitamin A, and glycolic acid.

“Gone are the days of using a generic face wash and moisturiser; many consumers are now much more in tune with what they’re putting on their face, paying attention to every ingredient, hand picking their routines, and checking sustainability and animal cruelty credentials,” says Karl Kristian, founder of New Nordic. “None of the ingredients that have made the top list are too abrasive or intrusive on your skin when used properly. It’s clear that consumers are keen for simple, easy-to-use exfoliators and acids that remove dead cells, leaving skin clear and more even.

“Thick, abrasive scrubs are no longer as popular now that there has been further education about the delicateness of our epidermis and how to look after it properly.”
