The negative impact of coronavirus on tourism

Updated: May 27, 2020

Destination, resort and hotel spas around the world may well be feeling the knock-on effects of the negative impact that coronavirus is having on tourism and travel.

Some countries with coronavirus are closing their borders and curtailing flights, while those countries not yet affected are cancelling flights to infected destinations.

Considering the alarming rate at which coronavirus is spreading throughout the globe on a daily basis, it’s possible that the disease may reach South African shores, assuming it hasn’t already.

International health organisations are emphasising the importance of regular and thorough hand sanitisation to prevent the infection and spread of the disease. They advise rinsing hands under clean, running water and then washing all areas of the hands, including under the nails, with soap for at least 20 seconds before rinsing off well. If no soap is available, hand sanitisers that comprise at least 60% alcohol are recommended. People should avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
