SA prepares for World Wellness Weekend

South African spas, wellness centres, fitness professionals and anyone else wanting to participate in World Wellness Weekend (19 & 20 September 2020), are encouraged to take the Wellness Pledge, find a ‘wellness buddy’, and create short videos.

Founded by Jean-Guy de Gabriac of Tip Touch International, World Wellness Weekend is set to be celebrated in over 100 countries around the globe. It aims to inspire and empower people to make healthier choices and enjoy an active lifestyle with family and friends. Participating properties will host free and fun wellness activities during the event.

Says World Wellness Weekend South Africa ambassador, Taryn Lilley: “The world is a bit of a mess at the moment, so people need wellness more than ever. People are urged to take the Wellness Pledge, which is available on our website, and positively impact the lives of people near or far, through solidarity and sense of purpose. Cities can help their residents and become cities that implement sustainable development goals, good health and wellbeing for all.”

Lilley points out that it is always easier to commit to your pledge when you have a buddy alongside you to encourage and support you in your wellness journey. As such, people can find a ‘wellness buddy’ to make a difference in both their lives.

She continues: “Doctors and nurses are the first line of response facing the pandemic. As spa and health professionals, we should be the second line of responders, helping people towards vibrant health. It should be our duty to guide people to try new wellness activities, treamtents and programmes; to guide people to switch towards healthier lifestyles and prevent chronic diseases.

“We have some absolutely gorgeous venues all over the country, as well as fantastic resources to wellbeing professionals. Now is the perfect time to share what we, as wellness experts, do. We encourage our spas to send us their videos, sharing advice, mini workshops, or even just sharing their commitment and wellness pledge, so that we can share with the community. They could even start by just sharing a ‘welfie’ to join the initiative of, ‘Wellness for all’.”

Wellness Workshops

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many properties won’t be able to host physical events, so the World Wellness Weekend organisers have decided to go digital and host a virtual event.

Says Lilley: “We will be sharing a series of free Wellness Workshops and providing exercise, nutritional and healthcare tips over World Wellness Weekend. One of the confirmed live sessions will be an exercise workout called, ‘Bootcamp with a Cause’, hosted by Foreverstrong Transformation Studio. This fun-filled session will be a metabolic burn workout and guaranteed to get the blood pumping. It will cater for all fitness levels and all ages, so we encourage the whole family to all get involved.

“Ellerman House Spa will be hosting a session, taking us on a journey of breathwork and mindfulness. They will focus on yogic breathing, Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, and some lymph drainage to strengthen the immune system and work on increasing lung capacity.

“Also included in the line-up is a nutritionist sharing some healthy eating tips and easy non-guilty snack ideas. We have some exciting surprises in store for children as well, so we encourage the whole family to join in the fun. More sessions will be announced in the build-up to the weekend. If any other professionals would like to join in by sharing their skills, they can get in touch with me on taryn@spadynamics.co.za.”
