Legendary Hollywood goddess, Marilyn Monroe, is the most searched for name on the internet for beauty inspiration, according to a study by Recreate Yourself (RY).
Searches across hair, make-up and skincare conducted from April 2020 to March 2021 were analysed by RY to create a list of the Top 10 searches.
Monroe, who died in 1962 and was famous for being the most desired blonde bombshell of her time, came out with more than 191,000 searches.
Iconic model of the Swinging Sixties, Twiggy, had 165,430 searches. Despite modelling for only four years before pursuing a career in musical theatre, Twiggy’s huge impact on fashion and make-up continues to endure to this day. Her 1960s modelling make-up was characterised by the exaggerated false eyelashes that were so popular in the day, with lashes penciled in on the lower lid. A black line in the crease of her lids enhanced the eyes by making them look bigger, as did subtle cat-eye liner, pale eye shadow and heaps of mascara. It’s interesting to note that in those days, models did their own make-up for shoots.
A male beauty icon came in at number 3, namely the late British singer/ songwriter, David Bowie. In the early part of his career, Bowie was known for his outlandish and avant-garde make-up looks. Bowie had 150,900 searches.
Five other Hollywood actresses, most of whom were famous in either in the 1950s or 1960s, also feature in the Top 10 beauty inspiration searches. They are Brigitte Bardot (4), Audrey Hepburn (5), Sophia Loren (6), Grace Kelly (9) and Elizabeth Taylor (10).
The two other names on the list were famous for their notoriety: American model Bettie Page was known for her provocative-for-the-time pin-up photos in the 1950s, while singer/ actress Jane Birkin was famous for her French hit song – ‘Je t’aime…Moi non plus’, banned in a number of countries for its sexual content. Page was the seventh most searched name, with Birkin following at number eight.
