Believed to be a world first, a new measurement system that analyses the facial shape in 3D has been developed by Shiseido in conjunction with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The system also measures the optical properties of facial skin, such as subsurface scattering light, a factor involved in the translucent properties of skin. Researchers discovered that the subsurface scattering light decreases with age and is associated with five factors, including melanin level and the condition of the stratum corneum.

As part of the research, the facial skin of more than 1,000 people was analysed and the results published in a research paper titled, ‘Development of a System to Measure the Optical Properties of Facial Skin’, which appears in the Journal of Imaging Science and Technology.

Say the researchers: “While the appearance of the skin tends to be judged subjectively, we will further pursue research to elucidate the visual quality of the skin objectively and quantitatively through cutting-edge science to help realise the ideal skin for each individual.”

This research is being conducted under the Science/Creativity approach of Shiseido’s R&D philosophy, ‘Dynamic Harmony’.
