Breaking news – Government to confirm salon protocols

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

Great news for the personal care services sector is that Government is expected to confirm that the reopening protocols will be published by the NCCC (National COVID-19 Command Council) by the end of the week.

Following on from the efforts of the EOHCB (Employers Organisation for Hairdressing Cosmetology Beauty)in recent days, and in an effort to avoid the organisation’s threat of taking legal action to ensure the reopening of personal care services, Government has confirmed that the protocols that salons will need to follow in order to reopen, will be published at the end of the week.

The next step towards reopening the personal care services sector will be for the Government to publish these protocols in the Government Gazette. Once this has been done, salons will able to open, so long as they follow the protocols.

The Government Gazette is normally updated and published on a Friday. So, if the protocols are approved this Thursday, the industry could be open by the weekend. If the protocols are only confirmed by Friday afternoon, then they will only be included in the following Friday’s Government Gazette.

Either way, it is good news for the industry because salons will need time to ensure that they have everything in place to comply with the new protocols.

The government has been facing growing pressure to free up the sector in recent weeks, the media coverage of the legal challenge by Carlo Viljoen and Jade Tome, plus radio and TV coverage of the plight of therapists and stylists have probably pushed the government into addressing this.

As soon as Professional Beauty knows exactly what the protocols are, we will let you know. We will also be able to supply you with details of where to get the best deals on the equipment you might need. (Report by Phil Woods)
