Wellness now an entrenched movement 09 January 2018 Having started out as a mere trend about 10 years ago, wellness has now become a valid movement that continues to gain momentum all over the world, a fact that is particularly relevant to the spa, healthcare and tourism sectors. Says Susie Ellis, chairman and CEO of The Global Wellness Institute (GWI): “At the recent Global Wellness Summit held in Palm Beach, Florida (USA), Dr Andrew Weil spoke about the importance of ‘making wellness fashionable’. “Indeed, there has never been as much energy for wellness as there is today. Both the Global Wellness Summit, which is now the largest gathering of global executives worldwide and the voice of the Global Wellness Economy, as well as the non-profit GWI, which contributes research, supports initiatives and conducts thought-leadership roundtables, have been major contributors.” Ellis believes that the wellness movement has only just begun. “There is so much more that needs to be done to make sure everyone benefits from the opportunity to be proactive towards their personal health and wellbeing. This is a message we will continue to trumpet in 2018,” she states. To this end, the GWI recently launched the ‘Wellness Moonshot: A World Free of Preventable Disease’. The Wellness Moonshot is a call to action to eradicate chronic, preventable disease worldwide by uniting the health and wellness industries. GWI’s goal is to aggregate information on a global scale, collaborate to share knowledge and eliminate silos, and accelerate the pace of change to achieve significant results.   Ellis notes that the January issue of Vogue magazine shows that wellness is now truly fashionable. She continues: “Oscar- winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o, is on the cover, in a yoga tree-pose, while balancing on a paddleboard. The word ‘Wellness’ is in huge letters across the cover. And Yahoo Lifestyle underscored the message by noting: ‘Wellness might be the theme of 2018, at least if Vogue has anything to say about it’.” This year’s Global Wellness Summit runs from 6 to 8 October in Italy.
